OLE MISS TO BEGIN TWO-GAME SEC ROAD TRIP AT TENNESSEE ON SATURDAY
The Ole Miss Rebels (12-4, 0-3 SEC) begin a two-game Southeastern Conference road trip on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to meet the No. 12 nationally-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (14-2, 2-1 SEC). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Rebels enter Saturday's contest on a three-game skid after falling to Arkansas, 71-64 on Jan. 5, No. 6 Florida, 75-71 on Jan. 8 and Mississippi State, 61-59 on Jan. 12. Prior to that setback, Ole Miss had a six-game winning streak with victories over Virginia Commonwealth (75-62, Dec. 7), Memphis (74-64, Dec. 11), Southeastern Louisiana (77-46, Dec. 15), Louisiana-Monroe (76-60, Dec. 19), Prairie View A&M (98-74, Dec. 29) and Birmingham-Southern (89-48, Jan. 2). The Volunteers enter Saturday's contest after a narrow 76-73 setback to Vanderbilt on Jan. 12. The loss snapped Tennessee's three-game win streak.
OLE MISS-TENNESSEE SERIES
Saturday's game will be the 93rd meeting between the two teams. The Volunteers hold a 59-33 lead in the series, which began in 1924. Tennessee has won two straight in the series, posting a 77-67 victory in Knoxville in 1997-98 and a 69-67 win in Oxford last year. Tennessee also holds a 33-10 series lead in games played in Knoxville. The last time Ole Miss won in Thompson-Boling Arena was the 1990-91 season, a 93-88 win.

Tennessee 69, Ole Miss 67
Tennessee guard Brandon Wharton scored a game-high 25 points - all in the second half - and Tony Harris added 17 points to lift the Volunteers to a 69-67 Southeastern Conference victory over Ole Miss. Harris also led Tennessee on the boards with eight rebounds.
Ole Miss senior All-America candidate Keith Carter netted a team-best 20 points, while sophomore forward Rahim Lockhart posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 boards. Senior Jason Smith added 12 points, six boards, four assists and five steals.
Tennessee led 66-63 with a little over a minute left in the contest when Carter buried a trey to tie the game at 66-all with 1:01 remaining. A Vincent Yarbrough put-back gave the Volunteers a 68-66 advantage with 30 seconds left. Smith then made one of two free throws to cut the Tennessee lead to one at 68-67. After Wharton made one free throw with 16 seconds left, Ole Miss had two opportunities to tie or win the game, but was unable to convert.
Earlier in the second half, the Rebels held a 41-31 lead at the 15:35 mark, but the Volunteers went on a 22-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a 53-48 advantage with 7:45 left. Ole Miss came back to tie the game at 62-all on a Michael White three-pointer, setting up the game's final two minutes of play.
Ole Miss held the lead throughout most of the first half, building its advantage to as many as 14 points at 29-15 with 5:24 left before the half. The Volunteers then closed the first half with a 10-2 spurt to slice the Rebel lead to 31-25 at the break.

SCOUTING TENNESSEE
Tennessee, ranked No. 12 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls, brings a 14-2 overall record and a 2-1 Southeastern Conference mark into Saturday's game. The Volunteers dropped a narrow 76-73 decision to Vanderbilt on Jan. 12, but prior to that setback, Tennessee had won three straight over Radford (72-46), South Carolina (60-52) and LSU (64-59). The Volunteers began the 1999-2000 campaign with 11 consecutive victories before their first loss of the season to Tulsa in the title game of the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic. The tandem of Vincent Yarbrough and Tony Harris is leading the Volunteer offense. Yarbrough is tops on the team with a 14.5 scoring average, while Harris is second at 13.5. Harris is also the top three-point shooter for Tennessee, hitting 42.7 percent from beyond the arc. Isiah Victory leads Tennessee on the boards with a 6.9 rebounding average. The Volunteers are shooting 45.9 percent from the field, 38.3 percent from the three-point line and 64.1 percent from the charity stripe. Tennessee is averaging 80.5 points per game and 41.3 boards per contest.

BARNES IN SECOND SEASON AS REBEL MENTOR
Rod Barnes is in his second season at the helm of the Ole Miss Rebel basketball program. With the Rebels' setback to Mississippi State on Jan. 12, Barnes' overall coaching record now stands at 32-17. In his first season in 1998-99, Barnes guided Ole Miss to a 20-13 overall record and a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Satartia, Miss., native became the first head coach in the history of Rebel basketball to win 20 games in his first season. Last season, Barnes also guided the Rebels to a 72-70 win over Villanova in the NCAA Tournament first round, marking the program's first-ever victory in NCAA play. Barnes was hired as the Rebel head coach on April 9, 1998, after Rob Evans left to take the h ead coaching position at Arizona State on April 6. A 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes served as an assistant under Evans from 1993-98. During his time as an assistant coach, the Rebels compiled a record of 76-63 and won back-to-back Southeastern Conference Western Division titles and received consecutive NCAA Tournament berths in 1997 and 1998. Barnes played at Ole Miss from 1984-88 and was named All-SEC his senior season. He still ranks on the Ole Miss career charts in scoring (17th, 1,201 points), assists (2nd, 456) and steals (6th, 154).
BARNES REACHES 50
Yes, Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes celebrated his birthday last Saturday (Jan. 8), but he hasn't reached 50 in terms of age. However, Saturday's game versus Tennessee will be the 50th for Barnes as the Rebels' head coach. He has a 32-17 overall coaching record in his one-plus seasons. By the way, Barnes turned 34 years old last Saturday.
AN ALL-STAR REUNION
Saturday's contest will be an all-star reunion-of sorts. Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes, Rebel senior forward Marcus Hicks (Jackson, Tenn.) and Tennessee senior forward C.J. Black were all members of the Southeastern Conference All-Stars that traveled to Japan last August. Barnes, who served as the team's co-head coach with LSU's John Brady, guided the SEC All-Stars to a 4-1 record versus the Japan National Team. Hicks averaged 10 points and 6.2 boards, and led the team in rebounding, blocked shots and field goal percentage. Black averaged 8.2 points and 5.6 rebounds, while shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
WILL THE REBELS GET A BREAK?
Every team needs breaks to have successful seasons, but so far, the breaks have not gone the Rebels' way in the early portion of the Southeastern Conference schedule. It seems that the next opponent for Ole Miss suffers a setback prior to its contest with the Rebels. See the chart below:

WILLIAMS MAKES HIS RETURN
Well, senior Lataryl Williams (Oxford, Miss.) never really left-it was just his shooting touch that left him for a couple of games. However, it returned in a big way versus Mississippi State on Jan. 12. The 6-foot-7 forward hit 8-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-4 from the three-piint arc. He scored 21 points (one shy of tying his career high of 22), and the eight field goals were a career best and the four treys tied a career high. In the previous two SEC games versus Arkansas and Florida, Williams was 2-of-11 from the field and 1-of-5 from the arc. Despite those two subpar performances, Williams is still hitting 60.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from the arc in the Rebels' last 10 games. For the season, Williams is shooting 54.7 percent from the floor and 39.6 percent from the three-point line.
WILLIAMS ALSO TOUGH ON THE DEFENSIVE END
The offensive end of the floor wasn't the only place senior Lataryl Williams could be found versus the Bulldogs on Jan. 12. The forward also was at the top of his game on defense, recording a career-best five blocked shots against Mississippi State. The five blocked shots are tied for the eighth most in a single game in Rebel history. Williams now has 13 blocked shots for the season and 21 for his career.
REBELS VERSUS THE SEC EASTERN DIVISION
The Rebels have a 17-32 regular-season record versus teams from the SEC Eastern Division since the conference began divisional play in the 1991-92 season. Ole Miss is 20-38 versus the SEC Eastern Division teams, including tournament play. The Rebels, however, posted a 10-8 record (regular season only) versus their Eastern Division foes over the previous three seasons (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99). "GET THAT SHOT OUTTA HERE!!!"
With his two blocked shots versus Mississippi State on Jan. 12, junior Rahim Lockhart (Mendenhall, Miss.) moved into the top six on the Ole Miss career blocked shot chart. The 6-foot-8 forward currently has 69 career blocks and is No. 6 on the chart. He passed former Rebel Patrick Eddie, who recorded 68 blocked shots in his two year-career from 1989-91, and needs only two more to tie Ronnie Sims (1985-86), who recorded 71 blocked shots. Lockhart leads the Rebels in blocked shots this season with 32, and is ranked fourth in the SEC in blocks.
BROWN HAS CAREER GAME VERSUS FLORIDA
Sophomore Darrian Brown (West Memphis, Ark.) had the proverbial "hot hand" against the nationally-ranked Gators on Jan. 8, and in turn, had a career game versus Florida. The 6-foot-6 guard netted a career-best 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from the three-point arc, and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The four treys were also a career best for him. For the season, Brown is averaging 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds. He is shooting 37.9 percent from the floor and 72.4 percent from the free throw line.
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS...
Well, for the Rebels, it seems as if that number is 70. In the past four seasons (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000), Ole Miss has an incredible 66-8 record (.892 winning percentage) when it scores 70 points or more in a game. On the other hand, the Rebels are 7-25 when they net less than 70 points in a game. This year, the Rebels are 11-2 when scoring 70 points or more. In SEC action the last four seasons, Ole Miss has a 30-5 record (.857 winning percentage) when scoring 70 or more points.
HARRISON HITS 150
Sophomore Jason Harrison (Little Rock, Ark.) recorded the 150th assist of his career in the Rebels' game versus Mississippi State on Jan. 12. With his five assists versus the Bulldogs, Harrison now has 152 for his career. The 5-foot-5 guard leads the team with 66 assists this season, and is ranked ninth in the SEC in assists.
HICKS PASSES 600-POINT MILESTONE VERSUS FLORIDA
Senior Marcus Hicks reached another milestone in his career as a Rebel, passing the 600-point plateau. Hicks hit point No. 600 on a free throw at the 16:53 mark of the first half versus the Gators, and finished the game with 11 points. After his seven-point performance versus Mississippi State on Jan. 12, the 6-foot-6 senior now has scored 617 points in 49 career games. Earlier this season, Hicks reached the 500-point plateau in the Rebels' game at Oklahoma on Dec. 4. Hicks entered the game with 492 points, and scored his 500th point on a free throw at the 3:10 mark of the first half versus the Sooners.
REBEL DOMINATION ON THE BOARDS
Despite being out-rebounded by VCU on Dec. 7 and Mississippi State on Jan. 12, Ole Miss has simply dominated its opponents on the boards this season. After 16 games, the Rebels are averaging 39.7 rebounds per contest, while the opposition has a rebounding average of 29.5 boards-a margin of 10.2 boards per game, which is first in the SEC. In the NCAA stats released on Jan. 10, the Rebels were fifth in the nation in rebounding margin. The following chart shows the Rebels' domination on the boards:

REBELS GETTING THEIR SHOOTING TOUCH BACK
Despite their "off" shooting night versus Arkansas on Jan. 5, the Rebels are still shooting over 50 percent from the field in their last nine games. Ole Miss is shooting a combined 50.9 percent (287-of-564) from the floor in the last 11 contests, and is shooting 47.5 percent from the field overall, which is fourth in the SEC. The Rebels started the 1999-2000 campaign on a subpar note in terms of shooting from the field, but that changed in early December. Since Dec. 1, Ole Miss has shot over 50 percent from the floor against Alabama State, Oklahoma, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe and Birmingham-Southern and nearly hit 50 percent from the field versus VCU, Memphis, Prairie View A&M, Florida and Mississippi State. The lone outing during the nine-game stretch in which the Rebels did not come close to hitting 50 percent was the Jan. 5 Arkansas game. REBELS START WITH 12-1 RECORD FOR SECOND TIME IN THREE SEASONS
Prior to its losses to Arkansas and Florida, Ole Miss had started the 1999-2000 season with a 12-1 record, marking the second time in three seasons the Rebels had done so. The 1997-98 Rebel squad also began its year with a 12-1 record. The last time an Ole Miss team started a campaign with a better record was 1925-26 when that squad had a 15-1 record to begin the year. That team finished the season with a 15-2 mark.
