Men's Tennis Escapes Memphis 4-3 Without Top Player

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - ,Ole Miss' Claes Lindholm defeated Alex Bucewicz of Memphis in the third and deciding set at No. 5 singles to clinch a 4-3 win for the fifth-ranked Rebels over the 51st-ranked Tigers Thursday. The Rebels, who improved to 11-3, were playing without All- American Alex Hartman.
With the team score knotted at 3-3, Bucewicz had a 3-2 lead in the final set, before Lindholm stormed back winning four straight games to clinch the win. He improves to 12-1 in dual matches.
Memphis got on the board first by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker defeated the Rebel tandem of Kristofer Stahlberg and Martin Selin 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Michael Chamberlain and Joe Schmulian defeated Paul Ciorascu and Catalin Gard 8-5 at No. 2. Ole Miss is now 3-3 when losing the opening doubles point.
With everybody playing up a spot in singles, Gard downed Schmulian 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Selin beat Richard Magney 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to win his 70th career match. Memphis added another point when Walker bested Ole Miss' Ciorascu 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Memphis picked up another win when Chamberlain stormed back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to defeat Patrick Chucri 7-6(3), 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Rebel senior Stahlberg, ranked No. 43 in the nation, rallied to beat the Tigers' Stapp 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to even the match at 3-3. Lindholm had to rally in his match too. After losing the first set 6-0, he won the second 6-2 before closing out the deal in the third.
The Rebels return to action Tuesday, March 26 when they host Tulane at 2 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
