OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore 1B Stephen Head has been a co-National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, he earned SEC and National Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, as he was tabbed by Collegiate Baseball newspaper for national honors.
In five games last week, Head batted .600 (9x15) with four HRs, 11 RBIs, 11 runs scored and also drew seven walks. He set a school record by reaching base safely in 16 straight plate appearances, recording nine hits and seven walks, from the ninth inning of the South Alabama game on Feb. 29 through his first plate appearance in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader with Eastern Illinois.
Head also recorded four-RBI games in the 15-6 win over Southeast Missouri State last Wednesday and in the 18-10 victory over Eastern Illinois this past Sunday. For the season, he has recorded five, four-RBI games in 11 contests.
For the season, he leads the team with a .500 (20x40) batting average. Head also leads the team with seven HRs and 28 RBIs, and his seven HRs are just one shy of Ole Miss' leading total from last season.
Ole Miss, 11-0 and ranked No. 10 in the nation by Baseball America, will host Arkansas State (8-6) Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The 11-0 record marks the Rebels' best start in school history.
