Brandee Presley and Shey Taiwo Won Event Titles
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field got off to a strong start, winning two individual event titles at Day One of the Vanderbilt Invitational on Friday night.
Junior and returning Second-Team All-American Shey Taiwo claimed an event win for the first time this season in the weight throw, throwing a season-best 21.24m (69-08.25) – defeating the reigning SEC runner-up Madi Malone of Auburn by three centimeters (21.21m/69-07.00). Taiwo's winning throw pushes her up to No. 7 in the NCAA and No. 4 in the SEC this season.
In addition to Taiwo, Ole Miss placed three more in the top-10 in the women's weight throw. Freshman Jasmine Mitchell came in fourth with a mark of 20.72m (67-11.75), while junior Deborah Bulai finished sixth at 20.09m (65-11.00). Sophomore Tedreauna Britt rounded out the top-10 for Ole Miss with a ninth-place finish and PR of 18.87m (61-11.00), the No. 8 mark in school history.
Combined with last week's performances from Bulai (21.53m/70-07.75) and Mitchell (21.22m/69-07.50), Ole Miss stands as the only school in the nation to have multiple athletes ranked within the top-10 of the women's weight throw, with three Rebels now sitting in that position.
Sophomore Brandee Presley, fresh off a spectacular opening meet at UAB in which she shattered the Ole Miss record in the 60-meter dash, hopped right back into the winner's spot on the podium with a win in the 200-meter on Friday. Presley emerged victorious in a crowded field of 56, clocking a time of 24.10 for the win – the fifth-best 200-meter time in the SEC that also ranks No. 12 in the NCAA this season.
Ole Miss also had strong representation in the men's pole vault. Sophomore Peyton Weissmann led the way once again, finishing as the runner-up after tying his indoor career best of 5.25m (17-02.75) – the ninth-best clearance in the NCAA and second-best in the SEC this season. Senior Cole Colozzo also had an impressive day, placing third with an indoor PR of 5.10m (16-08.25), the No. 6 mark all-time at Ole Miss. He currently ranks No. 18 in the NCAA at that height.
Junior Elijah Dryer had the best performance among the Rebel men on the track, finishing as the runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.41 – currently the 13th-best time in the NCAA and sixth-best in the SEC. This ranks just 0.01 seconds below his personal best, which ranks tied for seventh in school history.
Allen Gordon had another solid performance for the Rebel men in the field, earning two top-three finishes. The junior placed third in the high jump at 2.13m (6-11.75) before finishing third in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.61m (24-11.75) – the ninth-best jump in the NCAA this year.
Rounding out the day was the men's weight throw. Sophomore Joseph Benedetto led the way for the Rebels, finishing sixth at 19.59m (64-03.25). Danny Guiliani and Joseph Lanham also competed in the event and etched their names into the school record book. Guiliani placed 11th with a mark of 16.96m (55-07.50) that ranks 14th in school history, while Lanham finished 14th at 16.65m (54-07.50), the No. 15 throw all-time.
