#NGWSD20: Dear Marsha
A few bullet points to my younger self:
- Sports are a chance to push yourself and test yourself. There will be challenges; expect highs and lows.
- Through sport, you learn life skills. Examples include how to pursue a goal, be part a team, perform under pressure, and be mindful.
- Be a good teammate. Value and help your competitors. You cannot be in sports without others.

You cannot control outcome. Focus on what you can control and evaluate your success by your effort and how you did with what you could control.

- Doing your best doesn’t mean winning or having a PR. Doing your best is bringing your best effort every single day. Developing athletic skills is a grind; it takes years of deliberate practice.
- You cannot control outcome. Focus on what you can control and evaluate your success by your effort and how you did with what you could control.
- The journey and what you learn, how you grow, and how you use your experiences to help others is what really matters.
- Laugh and have fun. At the end of the day, sports are a game. Keep participation in perspective.
- Stay balanced in your life. Separate your worth from your accomplishments in sport.
- Sports are a super opportunity. Go for it.
