A $7.2 million renovation project for Prefontaine Stadium, formerly known as the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, has made the Rebels' facility one of the finest in the nation. The updated facility, completed in September 2016 and first used during the 2017 outdoor season, included a brand new track surface, infield, video-board and throwing area adjacent to the track.
The Prefontaine name comes courtesy of a generous $750,000 gift from Ole Miss supporters Debbie and Andy Prefontaine. They became Ole Miss fans when their son, Kevin, attended the university in the 1990s, with Andy choosing Ole Miss Track & Field's stadium as the destination for his gift in part as a way to honor his cousin, the legendary Steve Prefontaine who ran at Oregon and was the crown jewel of American distance running before his tragic death at the age of 24.
Prefontaine Stadium was originally completed in the fall of 2003 and played host to the 2004 SEC Outdoor Championships. Numerous other enhancements, such as a state-of-the-art throwing cage and cosmetic upgrades, help set the stage for the 2022 SEC Outdoor Championships, which helped generate an estimated $2.8 million in business for the Oxford community across three days of superb competition.
Coupled with the neighboring Manning Center, a majestic multi-sport indoor facility renovated in 2014 and again in 2023, Ole Miss Track & Field's training center is second to none.
Prefontaine Stadium features prime seating for more than 1,500 spectators with a concession area.
The updated facility includes the following features:
- Coaches offices
- Team meeting room
- Beynon Sports Surfaces 2000 full pour polyurethane running surface with hobart texture
- State-of-the-art throwing area at the south end of the complex
- Daktronics video-board that measures 37 feet, 6 inches by 26 feet, 8 inches
