Rebel Netter Falls In Southern Collegiate Final

ATHENS, Ga. - Ole Miss tennis freshman Alexander Hartman's bid for the Southern Collegiate Championship, came up short Sunday, as he lost in the finals to Doug Root of Duke at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Root, ranked No. 23 in the nation and seeded No. 2 in the Division I singles, took command in the first set, but then Hartman battled to a second-set tiebreaker before losing 6-2, 7- 6(4) in his first collegiate tournament final. Hartman had not lost a set in his four previous matches of the tournament before Sunday's final. His record now stands at 11-2 for the year.
On his way to the final, Hartman dominated Juan Yanuzzi (ETSU) 6-1, 6-1, Tom Dalby (UAB) 6-2, 6-1 and Pietro Demichelli 6-2, 6-3, before defeating Paul Podbury (Tennessee) 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.
In his first collegiate tournament, Hartman advanced all the way from the prequalifying tournament at the National Clay Court Championships to the main draw. He will begin competing in the qualifying tournament at the Reebok All-American Championships Tuesday in Austin, Texas. The All-American Championships is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam.
