Ole Miss Tennis Takes Fifth AT NCT Championships

STANFORD, Calif. - Ole Miss defeated Notre Dame 28-20 to finish fifth at the WingspanBank.com/WTT National Collegiate Tennis Championships at Taube Family Tennis Stadium, Sunday.
After losing to LSU in the quarterfinals yesterday, Ole Miss bounced back to beat Vanderbilt 30-17 last night before today's win. The Rebels and Lady Rebels posted a 3-1 record to finish fifth among 16 of the nation's top teams in the inaugural event.
Mariana Eberle and Celeste Frey got things going against Notre Dame with a 6-5(1) win over Michelle Dasso and Kelly Zalinksi in the women's doubles. Rebel James Shortall defeated Ryan Sachire, who is ranked second in the nation, 6-4, to give Ole Miss a 12-9 lead in the match.
In men's doubles, Shortall and Vikrant Chadha won a tiebreaker wtih Trent Miller and Sachire 6-5(3) to make it 18-14 Ole Miss. Dasso, ranked seventh in the nation, pulled Notre Dame to within 22-20 as she edged Ivona Mihailova 6-4 in women's singles.
Chadha and Mihailova teamed up in the mixed doubles to dominate Dasso and Miller 6-0 to clinch the match for Ole Miss.
The Rebels downed Kansas 30-13 in the first round before losing to LSU 25-20 in overtime in the quarterfinals.
The three-day, 16-team event, creates the unique scenario in which a co-ed national collegiate champion will be crowned in an NCAA-sanctioned sport. The field was made up of 16 of the top men's and women's NCAA teams based on their combined season-ending ITA rankings.
The Rebels, NCAA Final Four qualifiers, ended the 1999 season ranked No. 3 in the nation, while the Lady Rebels finished No. 6, their highest season-ending ranking ever.
