Men's Tennis Advances To Quarterfinals At ASU Thunderbird Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. - Vikrant Chadha of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals in singles at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational Thursday, while fellow teammate Fredrik Mellin lost in the first round at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Chadha, seeded No. 7 in the tournament, defeated David Mercier of Utah 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and then beat Prakash Vekataraman of Rice 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. The lone senior on the Rebel squad, Chadha is competing in his first tournament in singles. He participated in the World Team Tennis Collegiate Championships last weekend. Chadha will face Gerrardo Mulas of SMU in the quarterfinals Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Mellin, a sophomore transfer from South Alabama lost to Robert Collins of Rice 6-4, 7- 6(4) in the first round and dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Arizona State's Ed Carter in the consolation.
The two were competing in doubles against ASU's Matt Klinger and Andrew Golub.
In the Southern Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., freshman Alexander Hartman was the only Rebel to advance to the third round in singles. After a first-round bye, Hartman dominated Juan Yannuzi of East Tennessee State 6-1, 6-1. He will meet Tom Dalby of UAB Friday in the round of 16.
