OXFORD, Miss. -- David Sanders, a 6-foot-3 guard from Jackson, Miss., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Ole Miss beginning in the 2000-01 academic year, announced Rebel head coach Rod Barnes on Wednesday. Sanders joins Aaron Harper and Justin Reed as members of the 1999 Ole Miss recruiting class.
Sanders has re-signed with the Rebels after originally signing with Ole Miss in the fall of 1997. Last season, Sanders averaged 15.4 points, 5.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College. Sanders, who is currently enrolled at Northwest Mississippi Community College but is not playing basketball this year, will have three years of eligibility when he enters Ole Miss in the fall of 2000.
"We're glad to have David re-sign with our program," said Barnes. "David is a really athletic combo-guard who can come in and help our program immediately. He may be one of the most explosive players as far as quickness that we've had here at Ole Miss in some time. David is a great person who has been loyal to us. We're proud to have David a part of our family."
The 1998 Clarion-Ledger Mississippi Player of the Year, Sanders averaged 19.6 points, 8.2 assists, 7.4 rebounds and 3.2 steals in leading Provine High School to a 37-1 overall record and the Mississippi Class 5A state championship. Provine finished the year ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 25 in the final USA Today Boys' High School Top 25 Poll.
Following his senior campaign in 1997-98, Sanders was named to the Ledger's All-State first team and also earned Mississippi's Gatorade Player of the Year honors. He was ranked among the South's "Sweet 16" players by FOX Sports South's "Countdown To Signing Day" and was a 1997-98 Ledger preseason "Dandy Dozen" pick.
As a junior in 1996-97, Sanders averaged 18.1 points in helping lead the Rams to a 21-8 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Mississippi Class 5A state tournament. He earned All-State second team accolades following his junior season.
The Ole Miss Rebels open their 1999-2000 campaign on Friday, Nov. 19 against Jacksonville State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Tad Smith Coliseum.
