OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's rifle team travels to Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday to compete in the Walsh Invitational, one of the nation's top collegiate rifle tournaments. The event, which is in its second decade of existence, is hosted by Xavier University.
The Lady Rebels (1-1-1) will shoot at noon at the Walsh Invitational on Friday, then travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Buckeye International on Saturday. Ole Miss closes out its weekend in Lexington, Ky. at the University of Kentucky Invitational on Sunday.
The Walsh Invitational is the largest indoor collegiate rifle competition in the nation and will run through the next four weekends. This year's 30-team field includes defending national champion Alaska-Fairbanks and the rest of the eight teams from last year's NCAA Championships, Navy, West Virginia, Murray State, Norwich, Kentucky, Xavier, Jacksonville State and Air Force. Competing this weekend with Ole Miss will be Nebraska, Missouri-Kansas City, Tennessee-Martin and UK.
"Nationally, it's the biggest match of the year," said UM head coach Valerie Boothe, who is entering her fourth season at Ole Miss. "It's a really big match for us. It will determine our mid- season ranking."
The Lady Rebels are fresh off their season-opening dual-match last weekend in Oxford. The team tied for second among four schools with a score of 1405. Freshman Maranda Stockton, a native of Livingston, Tenn., totaled a 374 to lead Ole Miss in her first collegiate action. Jill Barnes, a sophomore from Jackson, Miss., placed second on the squad with a 351, while Samantha Ball, a junior from New Albany, Miss., posted a new career-high with a score of 344. Senior Jessica Crockett of Brown Deer, Wisc., tallied a 336.
