Rebel Netters Advance In Championship

ATHENS, Ga. - Ole Miss men's tennis players Martin Selin and Alexander Hartman advanced to the third round of singles at the ITA Region III Championships Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

After a first-round bye, Selin, ranked 50th in the nation, downed William Guerin of Central Florida 6-1, 6-2. He will face Tennessee's Paul Podbury in the third round Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Hartman also had a first-round bye and then came back to defeat Steve Capriati of South Florida 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(4). He will meet LSU's Jay Ramaswami in the third round.

Fredrik Mellin downed Ondrej Silva of Bethune Cookman 6-0, 6-3 in the first round before falling to Tennessee's Mark Parsons in a tough three set match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). Patrick Chucri lost to Bill McGugen of Vanderbilt 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.

Rebel sophomore Kristofer Stahlberg pulled out of the event due to an injury.

In doubles, Hartman and Mellin had a first round bye and will begin competing Friday.

First round - Fredrik Mellin (OM) def. Ondrej Silva (BC) 6-0, 6-3, Bill McGugen (VU) def. Patrick Chucri (OM) 6-4, 7-5.

Second round - Martin Selin (OM) def. William Guerin (UCF) 6-1, 6-2, Alexander Hartman (OM) def. Steve Capriati (USF) 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(4).
