MOBILE, Ala. - Mira Radu of the Ole Miss women's tennis team lost to Lori Grey of Georgia in the finals of the ITA South Regional Championships Monday, 6-1, 6-4. By virtue of finishing as the runner-up, Radu will also advance to the Rolex National Indoor Championships, which will be held in Dallas in February.
"Mira had an excellent tournament in the South Regional, although she came up a bit short in the final," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "She has had an outstanding fall and we are excited about her future here at Ole Miss. Overall I am very pleased with our team's performance at this tournament and I am looking forward to our continued success in the spring."
On her way to the final, Radu defeated 47th-ranked Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida in straight sets.
Radu ended one of the most successful fall campaigns for a freshman with a 17-4 overall record. She advanced to the main draw in both grand slam events, the National Clay Courts and the Riviera All-American Championships, and won the Roberta Allison Invitational in her collegiate tournament debut. This fall Radu, who is ranked 77th in the nation, defeated five nationally-ranked opponents.
The Lady Rebels' other freshman Julie DeRoo, got to the quarterfinals with an impressive win over the nation's No. 3 player, Whitney Laiho of Florida.
She finished the fall with a 13-3 record. Radu also teamed up with sophomore Camilla Gould to win the B doubles title. In A doubles, seniors Mariana Eberle and Celeste Frey reached the semifinals.
