TUSCALOOSA, Ala..-- The Ole Miss soccer team fell to Kentucky, 4-1 in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday.

The loss ended Lady Rebels' 1998 season with a record of 9-7-2. It was Ole Miss' second consecutive trip to the conference tournament in the program's four-year history. The Wildcats (9-7-3) advance to the SEC Tournament second round and will meet No. 4 nationally-ranked Florida on Friday.

"We basically made four mistakes that Kentucky capitalized on for its four goals," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We applied more defensive pressure in the second half, and the entire team played well. I am very proud of every player on this team and what they accomplished this year."

Wildcat forward Carrie Staber gave Kentucky the lead just four minutes into the game, knocking in a deflected cross by Ole Miss starting goalkeeper Melinda Smith. The Wildcats added another goal eight minutes later when Susan Ledzianowski scored off a cross from Staber at the 12:54 minute mark to make the score, 2-0.

Kentucky opened the second half as it did in the first half, scoring in the first five minutes. Midfielder Jen Reese scored off another rebound, this time off the hands of Lady Rebel goalkeeper Birna Bjornsdottir to post a 3-0 lead with 39 minutes left in the contest. Ole Miss struck back as midfielder Sarah Wong chipped in a 10-yard shot over Kentucky goalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell at the 51:27 minute mark. Midfielder Jennifer Soileau, who was a 1998 All-SEC first team pick, assisted on the play for the Lady Rebels. The Wildcats iced the game as Kentucky defender Jaime Dellbringge finished off a cross from forward Jen McMaster.

Bjornsdottir notched the lone save for the Lady Rebels, while Kuhnell recorded four saves. The Wildcats outshot Ole Miss by a narrow 12-11 margin, and also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. -- OM --
