Lady Rebels Earn Fifth Place Finish

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--The Ole Miss women's golf team shot a season-best 293 in the final round of the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational Sunday to finish fifth with a three-day total of 899 at the University of Florida Golf Course.
The Lady Rebels' three-day 899 is the best three-round score in the history of Ole Miss women's golf, and their final round 293 is the second lowest total for a single round. They also tied the record for most top five finishes in a season with six, set back in the 1989-90 season.
Georgia, led by individual medalist Julia Boros, won the tournament with an 865. Florida finished second at 871, Arizona came in third with an 877 and LSU took fourth at 885. Boros captured the individual title with a 72-66-69--207.
Senior Lauren Mellen of Orlando, Fla., shot a final round 72 to finish ninth with a total of 220. She fired an opening-day low score of 68 but turned in an 80 on Saturday. It marks her fourth top 10 finish this year.
"I am really proud of the team," head coach Keil Purdom said. "The girls played well and played together as a team. This is the best we've played all year. To finish fifth in a tournament with three teams in the top 10 is a significant accomplishment. We beat four teams that are nationally-ranked."
Junior Megan Breen of Longwood, Fla., tied for 17th in the tournament with a 73-75-75--223. Freshman Marci Kornegay of Savannah, Ga., tied for 25th with scores of 77-76-73--226.
The Lady Rebels earned their sixth top five and seventh top 10 finish in seven tournaments this year. Ole Miss returns to action March 13-15 at the LSU/Fairwood Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
