April 29, 1999
OXFORD, Miss. -Area tennis fans are planning to gather at the Downtown Grill Wednesday, May 5 from 4-5 p.m., to watch the NCAA selection shows for the 1999 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. The public is encouraged to attend.
The team pairings and sites for both championships will be announced with the men's airing from 4-4:30 p.m., and the women's field to follow from 4:30-5:00 p.m. Local radio station Q93 will be broadcasting live from the Grill.
Both the Rebels and Lady Rebels are in an excellent position to receive an NCAA invitation and to host one of the 16 four-team regionals. Regionals will be played May 14-16 at various sites, with the winners of those regionals advancing to the "Sweet Sixteen".
"We have submitted bids to host both the men's and women's regionals," Rebel head coach Billy Chadwick said. "With both of our teams high in the national rankings, combined with our excellent facilities, we feel that our chances of hosting are very good. This is an excellent opportunity for our fans to show their support for our nationally-ranked tennis program."
The Rebels are ranked No. 4 nationally and finished the regular season with a 17-5 overall record, 9-3 in the SEC. They were the regular season SEC Champions. The Lady Rebels, ranked No. 8 in the nation, posted a 21-4 record during the regular season and their best finish in conference at 12-2. Last weekend the Lady Rebels defeated No. 3 Georgia and No. 1 Florida to win their first ever SEC Tournament Championship.
