OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss assistant coaches Rod Barnes and Russ Pennell interviewed Wednesday for the school's head basketball coach position, which became vacant Tuesday when six-year head coach Rob Evans accepted a similar position with Arizona State University.
Barnes and Pennell met with Chancellor Robert C. Khayat, Athletic Director Pete Boone, and Interim Athletic Director Eddie Crawford Wednesday morning before meeting with the Athletic Committee later in the day.
"Both were very impressive," Boone said of Barnes and Pennell. "They are quality individuals who deserve a hard look at our head coaching position. They put the time in, so they are very viable candidates."
Boone said he is still sticking with his goal of having the position filled this week. "We could possibly have another interview no later than Thursday," he said.
