OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's golf team, led by senior Lauren Mellen and junior Megan Breen, shot a 305 on the final day of competition at the Lady Rebel Intercollegiate Sunday to finish in third with a 312-305--617.
Mellen, who shared the lead after one round, carded a 78 in the second round to finish runner-up in the tournament with a two-day 72-78--150. It marks her first top 10 showing on the season and her eighth career top 10. Mellen's 72 on Saturday was a career low.
Georgia State fired a 298 in the final round for a 612 to overtake Arkansas-Little Rock (615) by three strokes for the team title. Arkansas-Little Rock shot a 298 in the first round, but came in at 317 on Sunday. Trelle Kite of GSU posted a 74 in the first round, and then came back to shoot a two-under 70 in the final round to capture medalist honors. She was the only player in the tournament to shoot a round under par.
"We played today, the way that I expect us to play, every round," head coach Keil Purdom said. "The team came out with an attitude to win. I didn't see that yesterday. We didn't do what it takes to win the first day, which is why we finished third. The teams that beat us had career rounds each day. I am proud of Lauren finishing runner-up."
Breen earned her second top five showing of the season and her seventh career top 10 finish with a 79-74--153. She took third at the Florida State Lady Seminole Invitational, the first tournament of the season for the Lady Rebels.
Freshman Marci Kornegay, after opening with an 80, turned in a 76 for a 156 total and a tie for 15th, her first career top 20 finish. Robyn Rinaldo, after shooting a disappointing 86 in the first round, carded a 77 in the final round for a 163.
The Lady Rebels will head to Bayonet Point, Fla., Oct. 10-12 to participate in the Beacon Woods Invitational.
