Women's Soccer Competes in Spring-Opening Tournament

6/21/1999 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. -- Freshman Regan Scanlon scored two goals to lead the Ole Miss women's soccer team to a 6-0 win over Memphis in the Lady Rebel round-robin tournament on Saturday. In the Lady Rebels' second game, freshman Jennifer Soileau scored the game winner to lift Ole Miss to a 2-1 victory over Mississippi State. In the third game, Mississippi State and Memphis fought to a 0-0 tie. "It was our first competition for the spring, but we looked very good in our games," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We've put together a very competitive spring schedule in which we play several SEC schools, and that should help us prepare for the fall. Saturday's games were a good warm-up for our spring season."

In the 6-0 win over Memphis, the Lady Rebels also got goals from Natalie Martt, Mary Ann Moss, Sarah Wong and junior transfer Amaris Smith.

In their second contest, the Lady Rebels fell behind Mississippi State, 1-0 in the first half, but Smith tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime. Soileau's game winner, which she scored midway through the second half, was the lone score after intermission.

The Lady Rebels return to action on Mar. 21 when they host a six-aside tournament at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Alabama, Vanderbilt, LSU, William Carey Arkansas-Little Rock and Tulane will participate in the tournament.
