OXFORD, Miss. -- Lady Rebel forward Regan Scanlon scored her seventh goal of the season in the 107th minute as Ole Miss defeated Southeastern Louisiana in overtime, 1-0, on senior day at the Ole Miss soccer stadium Sunday. "I couldn't ask for a better finish to the end of our regular season," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "Our entire team was playing for the five seniors."
The Lady Rebels stormed the Lion goal taking 40 shots en route to their third shutout in a row and a school record seventh this season. It was the most amount of shots fired by Ole Miss since Nov. 2, 1997, when the Lady Rebels attempted 46 shots in a 8-0 win over Tennessee Tech. "We applied heavy pressure on their defense," said Holeman. "Their goalkeeper just came through with some big saves to push the game into overtime."
SLU's Allison Holladay kept the Lions in the game recording 21 saves. The Ole Miss duo of Melinda Smith (one save) and Birna Bjornsdottir (two saves) played a half each to notch the shutout. Ole Miss' Jennifer Soileau set up the Scanlon score with her team-high 13th assist on the season. Soileau also leads the team with 31 total points (nine goals).
Before the game, the Ole Miss soccer team took time out to honor its first four-year senior class. Seniors Michelle Dubuc, Elizabeth Lee, Leah Rutledge, Tammy Zegledi and team manager Holly Strachan were recognized for their contributions to the Lady Rebels.
Ole Miss (9-6-2 overall and 3-5 in the SEC) will return to action this Thursday at 2:30 p.m. as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on Kentucky in SEC tournament.
