OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team downed 23rd-ranked Kentucky 7-2 at the Women's Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Rebels improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the SEC, while Kentucky drops to 6-3 overall, 0-2 in conference.

"We put forth a very solid effort today," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "We stayed focused from the beginning to the end and sustained our best effort effectively. I was particularly pleased with our sweeping the doubles because one of our greatest team's strength is in doubles. We played up to our capabilities."

Ole Miss won four of the six singles matches and then swept the doubles to take the win. Ivona Mihailova downed Christy Sigurski 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, but then Kentucky's Massoumeh Emami handed Celeste Frey a 6-3, 6-2 loss at No. 2 singles to even the score at 1-1. Agnes Muzamel defeated Carolina Mayorga 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the top spot to give the Lady Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Alesya Ignatieva dominated the Wildcats' Jackie Spicijaric 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles and Mariana Eberle beat Brooke Skeen 6-1, 7-6(5) at No. 5 singles as Ole Miss went up 4-1 in the match. Kentucky's Kelly Brown held off Courtenay Chapman 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to keep the Wildcats' hopes alive heading into doubles play.

It didn't take long for the Lady Rebels to dash those hoes as Muzamel and Chapman downed Skeen and Mayorga 8-3 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the victory for the Lady Rebels. Frey and Eberle defeated 13th-ranked Brown and Emami 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and then the Mihailova twins closed out the sweep with a 9-8 win over Sigurski and Stafford at the third spot.

The Lady Rebels return to action next weekend as they host 57th-ranked Harvard on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., and 14th-ranked Arkansas on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
