OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss Lady Rebel goalkeeper Birna Bjornsdottir of Reykjavik, Iceland is competing for a spot as the starting goaltender for Iceland's European Qualifier game against Sweden on August 26 in Skalleftea, Sweden. "It's an honor to have someone from our team represent their country in a World Cup qualifier match," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "The experience that Birna will gain from this opportunity is priceless." Bjornsdottir is competing with another Iceland goalkeeper to fill in for the national team's starter, who received a red card and was suspended for Wednesday's game against Sweden. Bjornsdottir is expected to be the starting goaltender for the Ole Miss Lady Rebel soccer team this season. As an Ole Miss' starter last year, she posted single-season school records with 97 saves, 11 wins and four shutouts. Bjornsdottir is expected to join the Lady Rebels soccer team before the season starts on Sept. 1 against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. Iceland's national team must earn three points in its next two games for the right to play a two-game series with Germany and an open spot in the Women's World Cup held in the United States next summer.
