OXFORD, Miss. - Emmanuel Wade, a 6-foot-3 guard from Marianna, Ark., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Ole Miss beginning in the 1999-2000 academic year, announced Rebel first-year head coach Rod Barnes on Wednesday. Wade joins Aaron Harper of Jackson, Miss., as Ole Miss' first two signees during the early signing period, which began on Wednesday.

Rated as one of the top guards in the state of Arkansas, Wade enters his final season at Lee High School in 1998-99. Wade, who plays for Coach James Banks at Lee, is a nominee for 1998-99 McDonald's All-America honors.

"Emmanuel is a combo-guard who could play at either guard position for us," said Barnes. "He is a very athletic player who will add a lot of quickness to our backcourt. Emmanuel is a tough competitor, and he will be an exciting player to watch."

A 1998 Arkansas 2A All-State pick, Wade also was named All-Conference following his junior season in 1997-98. He averaged 24.8 points, 7.1 assists and 10.2 rebounds in helping lead Lee High School to a 20-5 record last year. In 1997-98, Wade was a member of the Lee squad that also posted a perfect 12-0 mark in conference play, won conference and district championships and advanced to the state 2A playoffs, where it lost to eventual champion Clarksville. Wade was also named to the 2A All-Tournament Team last year.

During his sophomore season in 1996-97, Wade averaged 7.8 points on a senior-laden Lee squad. Wade was a member of the Lee team that won the conference championship and advanced to the state 2A quarterfinals in 1996-97.

This past summer, Wade played for the Arkansas Hawks AAU team that advanced to the 17-under national tournament. The Hawks finished in fifth place at the AAU national tournament.

Ole Miss, which posted a 22-7 record in 1997-98, will tip off regular-season play for the 1998-99 campaign on Friday, Nov. 13 versus Alabama State. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Tad Smith Coliseum.
