Lady Rebel Netter Advances in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - Celeste Frey of the Ole Miss women's tennis team won two matches to advance to the final round of singles qualifying at the Riviera All-American Championships Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club. Frey, seeded 9-16 in the tournament, came back from a set down in her first match against Viviana Mracnova (Oklahoma) to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the second round, she dominated Jennifer Heiser of Stanford 6-1, 6-0.

In the final round, Frey, ranked No. 74 in the nation, will face Vanderbilt's top player, Julie Ditty, who is ranked 23rd in the country. This will be the third meeting between the two this year, with both previous matches going three sets. Ditty won the first meeting, at the National Clay Court Championships 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 and then defeated Frey 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in the semifinals of the SEC Fall Coaches Championships.

Frey also teamed up with Mariana Eberle in the qualifying doubles, but results were not available at press time.

The prestigious All-American Championships is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam. The main draw, which begins on Thursday, will have an additional eight players added from the qualifying to the field of 24 auomatic qualifiers. Lady Rebels Agnes Muzamel and Ivona Mihailova are both already in the main draw singles, while Muzamel and Chapman are in the doubles.
