BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss senior guard Keith Carter has been named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team, as voted on by the league's coaches. The coaches SEC postseason honors were released by the conference office on Tuesday.
Carter was joined on the All-SEC first team by Auburn's Chris Porter and Doc Robinson, Georgia's Jumaine Jones and Kentucky's Scott Padgett.
"I'm excited for Keith that he has received this honor," Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes said. "It means a lot that the coaches voted Keith to the first team because they are the ones who are trying to prepare to defend him every game. It's special to be named to the first team, and he deserves it.
"He has worked very hard, and has been a consistent player for us all season. In our program, we preach that hard work pays off and rewards will come from hard work. Keith is a prime example of that."
A 1999 Naismith Player of the Year candidate, Carter has had a stellar senior campaign. He leads the Rebels in scoring (16.5 ppg), three-pointers made (68) and three-point field goal percentage (35.4). He is averaging 4.4 rebounds, and also has 48 steals and 58 assists.
Carter, who was named to the Associated Press All-SEC second team in 1998, currently stands in the No. 5 spot on the Ole Miss career scoring chart with 1,619 points. He holds the school record for three-pointers made with 240, and is ranked 12th on the Rebel career rebounding chart with 573. Carter is only the third player in Rebel basketball history to record at least 1,000 points, 550 rebounds and 200 assists. Elston Turner and Ansu Sesay were the other two Rebels to do so.
Carter is the 15th player in Rebel history to receive All-SEC accolades from the league's coaches. It is the third consecutive year that a Rebel player has been named to the coaches All-SEC first team, as Sesay was a first-team selection in 1997 and 1998.
The Rebels (18-11, 8-8 SEC) open play at the SEC Tournament on Thursday, Mar. 4 when they will meet South Carolina (8-20, 3-13 SEC) in a first-round game. The contest, which will be televised by Jefferson-Pilot, will start at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
