Rebels Clinch Second Place in the West!!!
Lady Rebel sophomore Jennifer Soileau (Baton Rouge, La.) scored the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half to lift Ole Miss to a 1-0 Southeastern Conference women's soccer victory over Mississippi State on Sunday.
The win gave Ole Miss its second straight berth in the SEC Tournament, which will be held at the University of Alabama Nov. 5-8. The Lady Rebel win coupled with Auburn's 3-2 loss to Alabama on Sunday makes Ole Miss the SEC Western Division No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Lady Rebels will play the Eastern Division No. 3 seed, Kentucky, in the first round of the tournament.
"This win gave us something to play for since we have qualified for the SEC Tournament. Our team is now refocused for the remainder of our season."
Havent We Met somewhere Before?
Ole Miss has faced Kentucky just two times in its four-year history, once in Oxford on Oct. 15, 1995 and once in Lexington on Oct. 1997. The Wildcats won both games 2-1.
The Cats Lair
The Wildcats rely on a strong defense this season. While it ranks in the bottom fourth of the SEC with only 26 goals scored, it has only allowed 22 goals on the season. Only once has Kentucky lost by more than one goal, and that was a 3-0 loss to No. 4 Florida. When KU takes a lead into the half, it is 5-0-1, and it is strong in overtime posting a 3-1-3 mark.
Something in Common
Ole Miss has struggled with opponents that the Wild Cats have played. Ole Miss is 1-5 against Florida, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Georgia, and LSU, while Kentucky is 4-2.
Revolving Keepers
Lady Rebel freshman goalkeeper Melinda Smith (Tacoma, Wash.) recorded a Southeastern Conference leading 5.5 shutouts this season to break the single-season school record and tie the career school record. She shares the career shutout record with goaltender Birna Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland).
Bjornsdottir, last years starter, has played in just six games this season due to a leg injury. She has posted 1.5 shutouts this season to keep pace with Smith. Smith now has 51 saves in 1,078 minutes of play, while Bjornsdottir has 19 saves in 500 minutes. Both Smith and Bjornsdottir have contributed to re-write an Ole Miss team record. The Lady Rebel defense has blanked opponents seven times this season, surpassing last years total of five shutouts.
Streakin
Ole Miss has either been hot or cold this season. It won its first six games of the season. It then went winless over the next eight games, posting just two ties. Fortunately, the Lady Rebels have returned to their winning ways with a three-game win streak entering the SEC Tournament.
Return of The Rebel
Starting forward Regan Scanlon (Pittsford, N.Y.) missed six games this season after breaking her collarbone in a 2-1 victory over Arkansas on Sept. 13. The Lady Rebels are 8-3 when Scanlon is on the field. Without Scanlon, Ole Miss is just 1-3-2. Scanlon was averaging a goal and an assist per contest in five games until her injury. Since her return from her five-game layoff, she has scored a goal against No. 5 Florida on Oct. 18, notched an assist against Arkansas-Little Rock on Oct. 27 and provided the game winner in a 1-0 overtime win over Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 1. She now has seven goals and six assists this season.
Mighty Mighty Mid
Midfielder Jennifer Soileau leads the team with three game-winning goals this season. Her most important goal was against Mississippi State, which clinched a second place finish in the SEC West for Ole Miss. Soileau leads the team in total points with 31. She has nine goals and a team-high 13 assists. Her assists per game average (.76 apg) is the ninth highest in the nation.
A Soccer Statisticians Nightmare
Ole Miss has posted 49 goals on 308 shots in 17 games this season. The Lady Rebels blasted 12 goals against UT-Martin on Sept. 6. It is the second highest scoring output by a Division I team this season. It also defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga, 8-0, on Sept. 5. In those two games, the Rebels averaged 10 goals a game.
Miss Assist
Senior Leah Rutledge (Chapel Hill, N.C.) has three assists on the year. With 45 career assists, Rutledge is the current SEC and Ole Miss all-time assists leader.
The Ole Miss Fab Five
Five Lady Rebels have recorded double-digit numbers in total points. Jennifer Soileau leads the team with 31 points (nine goals and 13 assists), followed by Sarah Wongs 23 points (10 goals and three assists), Tammy Zegledis 22 points (10 goals and two assists), Regan Scanlons 20 points (seven goals and six assists), and Amaris Smith (Spring, Texas) has 13 points (four goals and five assists).
No Mo OT!!
The Lady Rebels have had five games reach overtime. Ole Miss has struggled in games that go past regulation, posting a 1-2-2 record. The Lady Rebels have scored just once in overtime this season.
Top T.Z.
Whats all the fuss about? McGwire only has 70. Senior Tammy Zegledi (Winter Park, Fla.) rewrote the Ole Miss career points record with two goals in a 5-1 win over LSU on Sept. 11. After notching two goals in a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Little Rock, Zegledi now has 22 points on the season (10 goals and two assists). Zegledis 92 career points are the most in Lady Rebel history. Former Rebel standout Sarah Comeaux held the previous record with 85 total points from 1995 to 1996. Comeaux also holds the record for career goals with 41. With 38 career goals, Zegledi needs four more to move past Comeaux on the chart.
Good Things Come In Threes
Midfielder Sarah Wong (Vancouver, British Columbia) is tied for the team-high this season with 10 goals. She has had two hat tricks on the year, both in one weekend. The first hat trick was against UT-Martin (Sept.5) and UT-Chattanooga (Sept. 6). For her efforts, Wong was named to "Soccer Americas" college Team of the Week (Aug. 31 - Sept. 6). The Lady Rebels have had only four players record hat tricks in the schools four-year history. Two of the four did it this season, Wong and forward Regan Scanlon, who also scored three goals against UT-Martin. The other two players who have hat tricks on their resumes are Sarah Comeaux (five times, including seven goals on 11-11-96) and Tammy Zegledi (two times).
Rebel Roulette
Six different Rebels have scored the game-winning goal in the six Ole Miss victories this season. Sarah Wong, Jennifer Soileau (three times), Leah Rutledge, Tammy Zegledi (two times), Regan Scanlon and Amaris Smith.
Moonlighting
Junior Birna Bjornsdottir also plays with the Iceland National team as the backup goalkeeper. Bjornsdottir missed Ole Miss first game of the year as her national team played in a World Cup qualifier match. Bjornsdottir has posted a school record 15 wins and is second in career saves with 126, trailing former Lady Rebel-keeper April Cross (1995-96) who recorded 154 saves.
