BALTIMORE - Ole Miss men's tennis player James Shortall rallied from a set down in his final prequalifying match Sunday at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships to advance to the qualifying tournament, which begins Tuesday at the Suburban Country Club.

Shortall, beginning his second season on the Rebel squad, lost the first set to Jorge Sanchez of Nebraska 5-7 before coming back in the second set to win the tiebreaker (8-6). The two went to yet another tiebreaker in the third set, where Shortall led 4-1 when Sanchez was defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving the Rebel a 5-7, 7-6(6), 7-6(1) victory.

In the first round of prequalifying, Shortall held off Chad Hamilton of Howard University 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and then in Sunday's first round he defeated Greg Tranquada of DePaul 6-4, 7-6.

Shortall ended the 1998 season as a freshman with a 19-9 overall record, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and 10-5 at the No. 6 position. The National Clay Courts is the first leg of the 1998-99 collegiate grand slam and continues through Sept. 27 with the finals of singles and doubles.
