Rebel Netters Advance at SEC Indoor Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Martin Selin and James Shortall of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the third round of singles in the SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday, while Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist advanced to the quarterfinal round in doubles. The tournament is being hosted by Vanderbilt University at Currey Tennis Center.

Shortall, the 13th seed in the 64-player draw, downed Ed Rubin of LSU 6-1, 7-6 (2). Shortall will play sixth-seeded Mark Way of Tennessee, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Susheel Narla of Alabama, at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Selin defeated Vanderbilt's Andrew Nisker 6-4, 6-4. Selin will meet top-seeded Peter Handoyo of Tennessee at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Handoyo was a 7-5, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Joey Pitts of Georgia on Saturday.

The other Rebel in singles action was Anders Stenman, who fell to seventh-seeded Chad Carlson of Georgia 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Two of the Rebels' three doubles teams won their first-round matches. Mathieu Soto and Jeremy Bayon of Mississippi State downed the Ole Miss tandem of Bo Petro and Ben Cousins 8- 1. Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist, seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated Mark Kovacs and Tiago Rufoni of Auburn 8-5, and Selin and Stenman downed Reven Stephens and Patrik Johansson of Kentucky 8-2.

In the second round of doubles, Shortall and Sjoqvist squeezed past Graydon Oliver and Alin Taranga of Alabama 9-7 and will play third-seeded Marco Baron and Matthieu Ballay of Mississippi State at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Selin and Stenman were defeated by second-seeded Mark Way and Peter Handoyo of Tennessee 8-5.

First round--Soto/Bayon (MSU) def. Petro/Cousins (OM) 8-1; Shortall/Sjoqvist (OM) def. Kovacs/Ruffoni (AU) 8-5; Selin/Stenman (UM) def. Stephens/Johansson (UK) 8-2. Second round--Shortall/Sjoqvist (OM) def. Oliver/Taranga (UA) 9-7; Way/Handoyo (UT) def. Selin/Stenman (OM) 8-5.
