Last Time Out: The Ole Miss women's soccer team and Pepperdine University played to a 1-1 tie in the second game of the Colorado College Soccer Tournament Sunday. The Lady Rebels are 6-3-1 after this weekend, following Saturday's 3-2 loss to Colorado College. Pepperdine's Kate Desmond knocked a cross from Carlie Stokes to score the first goal of the game and give the Wave a 1-0 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first half. Ole Miss answered when all-time scoring leader Tammy Zegledi connected on a long pass from Elizabeth Lee and went one-on-one over the goalkeeper's head for the game-tying goal. It was her eighth goal of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Melinda Smith made her fifth start on the season. Pepperdine outshot Ole Miss by a narrow margin of 19-18 in the game, and had eight corner kicks compared to the Lady Rebels six. Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Soileau led Ole Miss with seven shots on goal.

Dial 10 For Assistance: No. 10 Jennifer Soileau (Baton Rouge, La.) leads the Lady Rebels with nine assists this season. She is second in the SEC to Vanderbilts Austa Helgadottir and is ranked seventh nationally in assists per game, posting an average of .90. Her seven goals along with her nine assists give her a team-high 23 points. But, Soileau isnt the only Lady Rebel who knows how to lend a helping hand. Senior Leah Rutledge (Chapel Hill, N.C.) has three assists on the year. With 45 career assists, Rutledge is the current SEC and Ole Miss all-time assists leader.

Welcome to the Scoring Machine: Ole Miss has posted 41 goals in 10 games this season. The Lady Rebels have the fourth best offense in the nation posting 4.1 goals a game. Ole Miss trails only North Carolina (4.90), Notre Dame (4.64), and UConn (4.45). The Lady Rebels blasted 12 goals against UT-Martin on Sept. 6. It is the second highest scoring output by a Division I team this season. Ole Miss has not been shut out this year in ten games. It lowest goal total was in a 2-1 overtime loss to Auburn on Sept. 27 and a 1-1 tie with Pepperdine last Sunday.

Taming the Tigers: Ole Miss will travel to the University of Memphis Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Tigers. The Lady Rebels have beaten Memphis in each of the Lady Rebels three years of existence. Ole Miss defeated Memphis in 1995 (1-0), 1996 (5-3 in OT), and 1997 (6-0).

Desperately Seeking Scanlon: Starting forward Regan Scanlon (Pittsford, N.Y.) broke her collarbone in the Arkansas victory on Sept. 13. Scanlon was averaging a goal and an assist per contest in five games until her setback. Since she has been out, the Lady Rebel forward position has mustered just five shots and a goal in five games. Ole Miss record is 1-3-1 in those games.

No Mo OT: Ole Miss has struggled in sudden-death overtime. It has not scored a single goal in an extra period, posting a 0-2-1 record in games that go past regulation. Of the Lady Rebels three losses, two are in overtime.

The Ole Miss Fab Five: Five Lady Rebels have recorded double-digit numbers in total points. Jennifer Soileau leads the team with 23 points (seven goals and nine assists), followed by Sarah Wongs 20 points (nine goals and two assists), Tammy Zegledis 16 points (seven goals and two assists), Regan Scanlons 15 points (five goals and five assists) and with a goal and an assist in last Fridays 3-2 loss to Colorado College, Amaris Smith (Spring, Texas) has 10 points.

Tremendous T.Z.: Whats all the fuss about? McGwire only has 70. Senior Tammy Zegledi (Winter Park, Florida) rewrote the Ole Miss career points record with two goals in a win 5-1 win over LSU on Sept. 11. After notching a goal in a 1-1 tie against Peperdine, Zegledi now has 18 points on the season, (eight goals and two assists). Former Rebel standout Sarah Comeaux held the previous record with 85 total points from 1995 to 1996. Comeaux also holds the record for career goals with 41. With 36 career goals, Zegledi needs six more to move past Comeaux on the chart.

Nothing but the Back of the Net: Midfielder Sarah Wong (Vancouver, British Columbia) leads the Lady Rebels this season with 10 goals. She has had two hat tricks on the year, both in one weekend. The first hat trick was against UT-Martin (Sept.5) and UT-Chattanooga (Sept. 6). For her efforts, Wong was named to "Soccer Americas" college Team of the Week (Aug. 31 - Sept. 6).

This Aint Beginners Luck, Baby: Freshman Melinda Smith (Tacoma, Wash.) has posted three shutouts in relief for injured starting goaltender Birna Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland). Her three shutouts is the second highest season and career total posted by a Lady Rebel netminder. In nine games, which include five starts, Smith has stopped 33 shots. She has played in 628 minutes this season.

"Big Time": The Ole Miss women's soccer team was selected to win the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference, according to the 1998 coaches poll released by the SEC. The Lady Rebels received 54 points, 30 of which were first-place points, to edge out Alabama (51 points) and Auburn (50 points). Both the Crimson Tide and the Tigers each notched 18 first-place points. Arkansas placed fourth with 41 points, Mississippi State place fifth with 27 points and LSU rounded out the Western Division with 23 points. With 17 letterwinners and 8 starters returning to the 1998 team, the Rebels are in definite contention for the Western title.

Rebel Rouelett: Five different Rebels have scored the game-winning goal in the six Ole Miss victories this season. Sarah Wong, Jennifer Soileau (twice), Leah Rutledge, Tammy Zegledi and Amaris Smith.

Hat Trick: The Lady Rebels have had only four players record hat tricks in the schools four-year history. Two of four did it this season. Midfielder Sarah Wong and forward Regan Scanlon scored three goals apiece for the Lady Rebels in the 12-0 victory over UT-Martin. The other two players who have hat tricks on their resumes are Sarah Comeaux (five times, including seven goals on Nov. 11, 1996) and Tammy Zegledi (two times).

Moonlighting: Junior Birna Bjornsdottir also plays with the Iceland National team as the backup goalkeeper. Bjornsdottir missed Ole Miss first game of the season as her national team played in a World Cup qualifier match. Bjornsdottir holds Lady Rebel records in career shutouts with six. She is second in career saves with 110, trailing former Lady Rebel-keeper April Cross (1995-96) who recorded 154 saves.

On the Road again: After playing five of its first six games on the road, Ole Miss has hit the road against for almost a month. The Lady Rebels began with a trip to Alabama on Sept. 25 and will not return home until Oct. 23, when they will host Georgia. Ole Miss will play seven games over the 31-day span.
