MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Behind two shutout performances by freshman goalkeeper Birna Bjornsdottir, the Ole Miss women's soccer team posted three wins Saturday at Montgomery, Ala., in its final tournament of the spring season.

Bjornsdottir posted her second and third shutouts of the spring season as the Lady Rebels posted a 2-0 victory over Auburn, followed by a 1-0 decision against Alabama. Ole Miss concluded the tournament with a 3-2 win over Southern Mississippi. Bjornsdottir also posted a shutout in a 2-0 win over Kentucky April 4.

"I thought we ended our spring season on a very good note," Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman said. "We tried to get a lot of competition in our spring schedule. I thought we had a very successful spring and by playing well against a tough schdule, it helps to motivate us for the coming fall."

The Lady Rebels used goals by freshmen Jessica O'Neill and Jennifer Soileau to hand the Tigers a 2-0 defeat to open the round-robin tournament. Then, Bjornsdottir posted her second shutout of the day, and Jenny Curry scored the game's only goal as Ole Miss defeated Alabama 1-0. It was the second win over the Crimson Tide for the Lady Rebels this spring, as they notched a 4-3 victory in the semifinals of the Lady Rebel Six-Aside Tournament March 21.

In the final game of the day, freshman Sarah Wong, junior transfer Amaris Smith and Soileau each scored as the Lady Rebels came away with a 3-2 win over Southern Mississippi.

For the spring, Ole Miss faced five Southeastern Conference teams. Four of those teams-- Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Alabama and Auburn--gave the Lady Rebels each of their losses in league play. This spring, Ole Miss posted a 3-0-1 record against those four squads.

Ole Miss will open its 1998 season on Sept. 1 versus Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The Lady Rebels will host their home opener Sept. 5 versus Chattanooga at 12 p.m. Ole Miss finished its 1997 season with an 11-9 overall record and a 4-4 mark in SEC play and earned the program's first-ever SEC Tournament berth.
