OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's golf team kicks off its season Monday and Tuesday at the Auburn Tiger-Derby Intercollegiate at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala.
The Lady Rebels will be joined by Southeastern Conference foes No. 3 Georgia, No. 7 Auburn, No. 14 Tennessee and Alabama as well as No. 24 North Carolina, Central Florida, Georgia State, Miami (Fla.), South Florida, Southern Miss, Tulane and UAB. Georgia's Summer Simmons took the individual crown last year in leading the Lady Bulldogs to the team championship. Ole Miss placed fourth a year ago.
"It'll be a challenge," said head coach Keil Purdom, who is entering her ninth season as Ole Miss coach. "I think they're prepared physically and mentally. I expect great things from this tournament.
"We're going in holding our emotions. We're not going to get too high or too low. This is the first tournament, and it's a long season."
Robyn Rinaldo will once again be leading the way for the Lady Rebels this season. The senior from Dade City, Fla., is already near the top of every career record list at Ole Miss. A 1999 All-SEC first team selection, Rinaldo holds two career tournament titles with 11 top-ten finishes and seven in the top five. She tied for second in last year's Lady Tiger.
Rinaldo will be joined at the event by juniors Marci Kornegay and Teresa Brown, who are second and third, respectively, in average among returners, and sophomore Kim Tudor. Seeing their first action for the Lady Rebels will be sophomore-transfer Elizabeth Hoffman, who was an NAIA National Champion at Texas Lutheran, and redshirt-freshman Allison Burrow, who will be competing as an individual.
