Rebels Advance At Clay Court Championships

BALTIMORE - Several members of the Ole Miss men's and women's tennis teams advanced on the first day of main draw competition at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships Thursday at the Suburban Club.
Lady Rebels Celeste Frey, Ivona Mihailova and Mariana Eberle all won their first round matches in singles. Frey, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, defeated LSU's Bruna Colosio 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to move into the second round where she will face Eline Chiew of BYU.
Mihailova, seeded 5-8, handed Elisa Penalvo of Marquette a 6-3, 6-4 loss. She will meet Delphine Troch of William & Mary in the second round, Friday. Eberle downed Elle Lewis of Rice 6-1, 6-1 and faces No. 1 ranked and top seeded Zuzana Lesenarova (San Diego) in the second round.
In doubles, Eberle and Frey won easily over Brooke Hart and Danielle Lund of Michigan 6-2, 6- 1. The duo, seeded third in the tournament, will play Erica Biro and Megan Miller of Duke in the second round. Eberle and Frey reached the finals at last year's clay court tournament.
For the Rebels, freshman Alexander Hartman continues his run, as he won two matches to reach the round of 16 in his first grand slam event. Hartman dominated 61st-ranked Chris Porter 6-2, 6-1 and 56th-ranked Steve Huss (Auburn) 6-3, 6-1 in the first two rounds. He will face Mississippi State's Marco Baron, ranked 14th, in the round of 16. Hartman has won seven consecutive matches after starting out in the prequalifying tournament.
It was not a good day for the Rebels' top player James Shortall, who was ousted in the first round by the nation's ninth-ranked player Brian Vahaly (Virginia) 6-0, 6-3. Sophomore Martin Selin defeated 29th-ranked Pawel Gajdzik 7-5, 6-3 in the first round before losing to 32nd-ranked Olivier Le Jeune of Fresno State in the second round 6-3, 6-3.
Both of the Rebels' doubles teams were eliminated in the first round.
