STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Ole Miss men's tennis player James Shortall won both his matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday at the Lincoln Tennis Center. Sophomore Alex Hartman lost out in the second round.
Shortall, preseason ranked No. 19 in the nation, defeated Mattias Tangeford of San Diego 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round and then won another tiebreaker in his second match to take a 6-2, 7-6(6) win over Kansas' Rodrigo Echaragay. Hartman, preseason ranked No. 10, defeated Joel Spicher of Duke 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in his first round match, before losing to Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA in the second round 7-5, 6-3. Rojer is ranked No. 30 in the nation in singles. Hartman falls to 8-2 on the year.
The All-American Championships features 16 of the nation's top 20 players in the WingspanBank.com National Rankings.
In doubles first round action, Shortall and freshman Conor Casey will not advance to the final four at this grand slam as they lost to Mike Kosta and Nathan Zeder of Illinois 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
