OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team closed out its season, and Jessica Crockett closed out her career on a winning note Saturday. In smallbore competition at the University rifle range, the Lady Rebels defeated both the Centenary men's and women's teams, while Crockett took the individual crown.
"I am really pleased with our team's performance this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. "Everyone shot extremely well. I was particularly proud of Jessica for ending her college career as an overall match winner. It was a great way to end the season."
Ole Miss (3-1-1) posted a 2083 out of a possible 2400 in the match. The Centenary men's squad finished second with a 1892, and although their final score is not yet determined, the CC women mathematically placed third.
Crockett scored a 548/600 in her final collegiate event to finish one point ahead of teammate Maranda Stockton and earn her first career match win. Crockett, a senior from Brown Deer, Wisc., has been a member of the Ole Miss rifle team since its inception in the 1996-97 season. She has missed only one event since the spring of 1997 and has improved her average all four years.
While Stockton, a freshman from Livingston, Tenn., placed second on Saturday, Samantha Ball, a junior from New Albany, ranked fourth with a 506. Jennifer Curry, a senior from Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., totaled a 482 to finish sixth.
