OXFORD, Miss. -- Former Ole Miss tennis standout Mahesh Bhupathi has teamed up with 19-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova in the mixed doubles competition in addition to competing in the doubles with partner David Prinosil (Germany).
The pair were in the third set against Jan Siemerink and Miriam Oremans of the Netherlands Thursday, when play was suspended. Bhupathi and Navratilova lost the first set 6-4, won the second 7-6(5) and were trailing 9-8 in the third. Due to more rain on Friday, they had not resumed the match.
Bhupathi, who won the Wimbledon doubles title last year with fellow countryman Leander Paes, has captured two grand slam mixed doubles titles - the 1997 French Open and the 1999 U.S. Open. Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon singles champion, has won four mixed doubles championships in her illustrious career at the All-England Club.
In doubles, Bhupathi and Prinosil advanced to the third round Friday with a 6-4, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(11) win over a pair of Swedes.
Bhupathi, the 1995 NCAA Doubles Champion, has won more than two million dollars in prize money and captured 15 titles, including four grand slam titles.
