MALIBU, Calif. -- The Ole Miss women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Pepperdine Sunday in double overtime at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
Waves' midfielder Tasha Spangler scored on a penalty kick at the 112:32 mark of the match to send the Rebels to 0-2 on the season. In a contest that saw both teams have several scoring opportunities, Pepperdine outshot Ole Miss 28-17, including a 23-13 shots-on-goal advantage.
"It was a great battle," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "It's just one of those games you hate to lose on a penalty kick, after such a back-and-forth game. I was proud of the way we fought. It shows we need to work on our goal production."
Melinda Smith started at goal for the Rebels and saved seven shots, before being relieved in the second half by Brittany Gillespie, who totaled 14 saves before surrendering the game-winner.
The Rebels lost 2-1 at San Diego State on Friday, and will be looking for their first win of the season against Oklahoma State, Friday at 4 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La. Ole Miss' home-opener is Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. against Southern Miss.
