Deroo Advances To Semifinals At Clay Courts

BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore Lady Rebel netter Julie DeRoo advanced to the semifinals at the T. Rowe Price National Collegiate Clay Court Championships, while Rebel Alex Hartman reached the quarterfinals in the men's singles draw Friday, at the Suburban Country Club. James Shortall and Conor Casey qualified for the doubles semifinals.
DeRoo upset the top seed on her way to her first final four appearance in a grand slam. She rallied to knock off No. 1 seeded and sixth-ranked Bruna Colosio of LSU 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-2 in the second round and then downed Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. DeRoo will meet third-seeded Bea Bielik of Wake Forest in the semifinals Saturday.
Hartman defeated Marko Cerenko of Duke 7-6(6), 6-3 to move into the quarterfinals which will be played Saturday. He will face fourth seeded Oskar Johansson, in a battle between two of the nation's top 10 players. Johansson is ranked No. 9.
Shortall and Casey won two matches to qualify for the doubles semifinals. The pair, seeded No. 7 in the tournament, won three tiebreakers on the day to advance, including a 76(4), 76(10) victory over Takeski Itoh and Bart Scott of New Mexico. In the quarterfinals, Shortall and Casey defeated Oskar Johansson and Oggie Kolev (Arkansas) 76 (6), 63.
Ole Miss narrowly missed out on having two semifinalists in the women's draw for the second year in a row, as Mira Radu lost a heartbreaking three-setter to Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame in the match of the day. Dasso won the first set 6-4 and Radu came back to take the second 6-1. Dasso fought off match point six times in the three hour, 41 minute match that came down to a tiebreaker (7-6) to advance. In her second round match, Radu upset the No. 2 seed Jahnavi Parekh of Baylor in straight sets.
The Lady Rebels have had a semifinalist at the National Clay Courts six of the last eight years. Former All-American Marie-Laure Bougnol twice reached the finals in 1993 and 1994 and won the title in ?94. Four-time All-American Agnes Muzamel was a finalist in 1997 and last year Ivona Mihailova and Celeste Frey reach the final four.
