DeRoo And Hartman Fall At Clay Courts

BALTIMORE, Md.-- Ole Miss Julie DeRoo dropped a straight-set loss to Bea Beliek of Wake Forest in the women's semifinals at the T. Rowe Price National Collegiate Clay Court Championships and Rebel Alex Hartman lost to Arkansas' Oskar Johansson in the quarterfinals Saturday at the Suburban Country Club. In doubles, James Shortall and Conor Casey's semifinal match was suspended in the third set due to darkness and will be finished Sunday morning.

Bielik, the tournament's No. 3 seed, needed only 55 minutes to defeat DeRoo 6-0, 6-2. DeRoo, ranked No. 28 in the nation, finishes her first tournament of the year at 3-1.

She also teamed up with Mira Radu in doubles to reach the consolation final. The two defeated Katja Kovac and Vida Mulec of Baylor 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3. They will play Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten of Kentucky in the final Sunday.

Hartman, ranked No. 10 in the nation lost in straight sets to ninth-ranked Johansson 6-1, 7-5. He has had a solid start this fall, winning the Country Club of Mobile tournament and going 3-1 at the Clay Courts.

Shortall and Casey were locked in a tight battle with VCU's Frank Moser and Florian Marquardt when the match was suspended due to darkness. The VCU team won the first set 6-2 and Shortall and Casey took the second set 7-6(3). The third set was tied at 5-5 with VCU serving when the match was called. They will continue the match sometime Sunday. The other semifinal doubles match between Tulane and Virginia was also suspended.
