BALTIMORE, Md. - James Shortall and Conor Casey of the Ole Miss men's tennis team lost their semifinal doubles match to Frank Moser and Florian Marquardt of VCU at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships, Sunday.
The match was tied at 5-5 in the third set Saturday, but was suspended due to darkness. The VCU team won the first set 6-2 and then Shortall and Casey, ranked No. 22 in the nation, came back to take the second set 7-6(3). With the completion of play, Moser and Marquardt, 26th-ranked, won the final two games to advance to the final.
It was a successful tournament for both the Rebels and Lady Rebels. Sophomore sensation Alex Hartman, ranked No. 10 in the nation, advanced to the quarterfinals in singles before falling to the eventual winner Oskar Johansson (Arkansas).
Hartman has had a successful start to his sophomore campaign. He won the Country Club of Mobile tournament earlier in the fall and extended his record to 7-1 with his quarterfinal showing at the Clay Courts.
Lady Rebel sophomore Julie DeRoo reached the semifinals in singles losing out to the eventual champion Bea Bielik of Wake Forest. Mira Radu got to the quarterfinals. Both knocked out the top two seeds in the draw, along the way. In doubles, DeRoo and Radu reached the consolation final.
It marked the sixth year in the last eight years, for the Lady Rebels to have a semifinalist at the National Clay Court Championships. Former All-American Marie-Laure Bougnol reached the finals twice in 1993 and 1994 and won the title in '93. Four-time All-American Agnes Muzamel made the final in 1997 and last year Ivona Mihailova and Celeste Frey reached the semifinals.
