OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team extended its school-record winning streak to eight games Friday with a 2-1 win over LSU in the Rebels' Southeastern Conference opener. Ole Miss freshman forward Amy Sample connected from 20 yards out at the 79:08 mark for her first career goal and the game-winner.
"I was very proud of our girls for staying tough until the final minutes," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "It could have been real easy for us to get frustrated, because LSU played very tough defense. I'm excited for Amy to get her first goal. It was just a great win."
Both Ole Miss and LSU scored on their first shot of the game. The Rebels (8-2, 1-0 SEC) jumped on the board 4:45 into the game when Courtney Biddle netted her fourth goal of the season off a corner kick from Jennifer Soileau. The assist gave Soileau 92 career total points to tie her with Tammy Zegledi as Ole Miss' all-time leading scorer.
The Tigers (9-2, 1-1 SEC) failed to get off a shot in the first half. LSU's first attempt came at the 65:14 mark when Melissa Shelton scored from 16 yards away to even the game at 1-1. The Rebels outshot the Tigers 22-6 for the night.
Ole Miss continues SEC play Sunday, when the Rebels host Western Division foe Arkansas (3-6-2, 1-1 SEC). Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
