STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Alex Hartman of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the third round at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday with two wins. The tournament's No. 4 seed, Hartman won both matches in straight sets.
In the first round, Hartman defeated Dane McGregor of Tulsa, 6-4, 6-3. Hartman then downed Roger Anderson of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the third round. On Friday, Hartman will get a chance for revenge, as he faces Princeton's Steve Berke, who put him out in the round of 16 at the 2001 NCAA Championships. Berke upset the No. 14 seed to get to the third round.
"Alex played great tennis in the first two rounds," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "He will be tested tomorrow by a guy who beat him in the NCAAs last year. His opponent, Steve Berke, knocked out a pretty good player in the second round here. Hopefully Alex can come out on top this time around."
Rebel senior Kristofer Stahlberg was not as fortunate in his first match this year. Fighting the stomach bug, Stahlberg had to retire in his match to Balazs Veress of California, after losing the first set 6-2.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season and this year's first grand slam event, the ITA All-American Championships feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. This year's event is highlighted by 14 of the top 20 players in the country.
