OXFORD, Miss. - Amy Sample provided the offense, and the Ole Miss defense held off a late Alabama rally as the Rebel soccer team shut out the Crimson Tide, 1-0, Friday night in front of a crowd of 971, the second-highest single-game attendance in Ole Miss Soccer Stadium history.
After a first half that saw the Rebels (7-5-1, 2-1 SEC) post an 8-0 shot advantage, Ole Miss broke the scoreless game at the 52:32 mark when Mary Katherine Ulmer set up Sample who connected with the back of the net from 24 yards up top left.
It was the second goal of the year for Sample, a sophomore from Crestwood, Ky., and the third assist for Ulmer, a freshman for Jackson, Miss.
"What an incredible game for this Ole Miss team," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "To be able to hold this Bama team to no shots on goal in the first half is amazing.
"It was a team effort. There's no way to single out just one player. This was a tremendous win for this program."
Shots were tied at 6-6 after the break as the Tide (8-4, 0-3 SEC), the SEC's top offensive team, pressed the Rebel defense. UM senior goalkeeper Melinda Smith collected two saves in earning her 12th career shutout.
The Ole Miss victory avenged a 1-0 overtime loss to Alabama last year in Tuscaloosa - the Rebels' only defeat to an SEC Western Division team in 2000.
Mississippi State upset Auburn Friday night in Starkville, leaving Ole Miss and MSU in a tie for first place in the SEC West. The Rebels look for the weekend sweep of the state of Alabama Sunday against Auburn at 1 p.m. CST at home. The Tigers, who have risen as high 21st in the national rankings, enter with a 5-4-1 record, 1-2 in conference play.
