Rebel Soccer Falls To Florida

Box Score

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Ole Miss soccer team could not contain Gators Andi Sellers and Abby Wambach Sunday in a 6-0 Florida win at Percy Beard Stadium. Despite the loss, the Rebels remain in a tie for the SEC Western Division lead with a 4-4 league mark, 9-8-1 overall.

Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn are all tied atop the SEC West standings with one game remaining for each team. While Auburn plays at rival Alabama on Friday, Ole Miss will be hosting State Friday at 7 p.m. CST in the Rebels' 2001 regular season finale.

A UM win would secure Ole Miss at least a share of their third straight SEC West title and a No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament, November 8-11 in Baton Rouge, La.

"This is what we've worked for all season," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "To play for a third straight SEC West title at home against our biggest rival is all we could ask for. It's great we control our fate. We have our goal in our hands."

For the 11th-ranked Gators (13-3-1, 8-1 SEC) on Sunday, Sellers, a senior midfielder, earned her fifth career hat trick in the games' first 23 minutes. The UF All-American opened the scoring with a three-yard score in the eighth minute, and connected twice more from eight and two yards away.

Wambach, the nation's second-leading scorer, picked up two goals and two assists as Florida improved to 6-0 all-time vs. Ole Miss. The six goals is the most allowed by the Rebels since a 9-1 defeat to the Gators in 1998.

"Florida has so many weapons," Holeman said. "They are by far the best team we've played this season, so it let's us know where we stand as a team."
