BATON ROUGE, La. - In its Southeastern Conference opener, the Ole Miss soccer team dropped a 3-0 game at LSU Friday night. The Rebels (5-5-1, 0-1 SEC) continue their SEC West road trip against Arkansas Sunday at 1 p.m. CST in Fayetteville.
"They played harder than we did," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "LSU played a very good defensive system. We have to learn to find a way to score against compact defenses.
"In the SEC, it gets tougher with every game. We have to get back to playing our game and refocus for Arkansas."
LSU (6-2-1, 1-1 SEC) held a 1-0 lead at halftime after freshman Stacie McDougall headed in an Ashley Mitnick corner kick at the 19:22 mark. The Tigers padded their lead at 68:21 with a Danielle Keath header, and again at 75:18 with an Artie Brown open-goal score.
UM goalkeeper Melinda Smith totaled five saves, including some dynamic first-half plays. LSU finished the game with a slight 12-10 shot advantage and an 8-6 lead in shots on goal.
Arkansas defeated Mississippi State, 4-1, Friday and enters Sunday's matchup with the Rebels with a 4-6 overall record, 1-0 in league play.
