Soccer Rebels Place 10 on SEC Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss had 10 of its student-athletes honored Tuesday on the 2001 SEC Women's Soccer Academic Honor Roll, as announced by SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer. For the fourth straight year, the Rebel soccer squad ranks among the top four in the conference in selections.
All five members of Ole Miss' 2000-01 graduating class received their fourth selection. Former Rebels Jessica O'Neill, Regan Scanlon, Jennifer Soileau, Sarah Wong and Sara Schauberger, who graduated with a 4.0 GPA, were also either Academic All-America or All-Region honorees a year ago.
Among the current players, juniors Megan Bowman from Lawrenceville, Ga., Anna Sanders from Fayetteville, Ark., and Heather Wilemon from Tupelo, Miss., picked up the honor for the second straight year. Senior Melinda Smith from Tacoma, Wash., and junior Kristin Chapman from Jackson, Miss., were first-time award-winners.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career, 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification, and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2001 SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2000-01 academic calendar.
The 2001 SEC Women's Soccer Championship is Thursday-Sunday, November 8-11, in Baton Rouge, La. Ole Miss (9-9-1, 4-5 SEC) opens against Mississippi State (13-7, 5-4 SEC), Thursday at 5 p.m. CST in a rematch of the Rebels' regular-season finale.
