BATON ROUGE, La. - Tiffany Weiss scored two goals in a two-minute span to lead Ole Miss to a 2-1 win over Mississippi State Thursday in the opening round of the SEC Soccer Tournament at LSU Soccer Complex.
The Rebels (10-9-1) advance to face the winner of the Auburn/Georgia game in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST. The first-round victory over MSU gave Ole Miss its 11th one-goal game of the year and avenged a 2-1 double-overtime loss to the Bulldogs last Friday.
"Anytime you meet a team for the second time, you look to seek a little revenge," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We went into halftime down a goal, and I think our team responded well. We've played tight games all year long, so I think it was an advantage for us to be in a very close match.
"A lot of players stepped up, as we used our entire bench. The girls persevered and I am proud of them."
Weiss, a sophomore forward from Dallas, tied the game at 1-1 at the 66:09 mark, booting a Kristin Chapman pass to the bottom right corner of the net. Chapman, a two-time All-SEC defender from Vicksburg, Miss., made her first career start at forward and picked up the assist while leading all players in shots with six.
Weiss connected on the go-ahead goal 2:06 later when she fired a shot from the top of the box past Bulldog goalkeeper Krystal Werges after a short clearance by the MSU goalie. It is the second multiple-goal game of the season for Weiss, who tops the Rebels in scoring with seven goals.
"This team has shown a lot of heart," Weiss said. "Being able to come here to the Tournament and break through all the injuries we've had and still win makes this such a great victory."
State took the early lead at 23:16 with Mary Fisher Patterson setting up Amy Van Zandt (15) who ripped the ball to the upper left corner of the net from 20 yards out. The Bulldogs, who were making their first ever SEC Tournament appearance, likely end their season with a 13-8 record.
The Rebels advance past the first round of the Tournament for the first time since the 1999 Championships, when Ole Miss finished runner-up to Florida.
