BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss sophomore Justin Reed was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 3-9, the league office announced Monday. Reed is the first Rebel to receive the conference's weekly honor since Keith Carter did so on Jan. 25, 1999 (1998-99 season).

Last week, the 6-foot-8 forward led the Rebels to victories over Louisiana-Monroe (78-43) and No. 22-ranked Memphis (71-67). The Jackson, Miss., native averaged 17.0 points and 7.5 boards, while shooting 52 percent (13-of-25) from the field and 100 percent from the foul line (8-of-8).

In the upset win over Memphis, Reed scored 17 points and grabbed seven boards. He had only six points at the intermission, but bounced back with 11 points in the final 10 minutes of the second half, including a clutch three-point play with 26 seconds left in the contest to turn a 67-66 deficit into a 69-67 Rebel advantage. Reed also netted the 500th point of his career in the second half of the Memphis contest. He now has 508 career points.

Reed had 17 points and eight rebounds in the win over Louisiana-Monroe.

A 2001-02 preseason candidate for the Wooden Award, Reed leads the Rebels in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). He is shooting 51.1 percent from the floor and 79.5 percent from the charity stripe, and is ranked among the SEC leaders in scoring (12th), rebounding (10th), field goal percentage (6th) and free throw percentage (7th).

The Rebels (6-2) return to action Sunday, Dec. 16 against Tennessee-Martin (6-1) at the DeSoto County Civic Center in Southaven, Miss. Tickets for the Dec. 16 encounter are $8 for upper level seats, $12 for lower level seats and $30 for the prime seating area (first four rows around midcourt).
