Shadow Day For Local High School

2/26/2001 | Men's Basketball

Students watch as J. Stern (show's producer/director),
Coach Barnes, and David Kellum
make final preparations to tape the show.

"Mic check, mic check," the producer announced.

You could hear a pin drop in Tad Smith Coliseum, as 13 students from Lafayette High and Oxford High schools listened attentively while television cameras zoomed in and out on David Kellum, the "Voice of the Rebels," and Ole Miss men's basketball head coach Rod Barnes during the weekly taping of the basketball show, "Ole Miss Basketball With Rod Barnes."

Keith Kimmons, senior video tape editor,
tells the students how the show is put together
after shooting the different segments.

Students also followed Kellum and Barnes to the University of Mississippi's Teleproductions Resource Center (TRC), located on campus in Bishop Hall, to watch the duo perform their voice-overs in coordination with the play-by-play action shots during the editing phase of the show.

The 13 students were participants for "Shadow Day" in Ole Miss' Athletic Department. "Shadow Day," coordinated by the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, is an annual event which is designed to offer sophomore high school students hands-on experiences by spending an entire day with a professional in their chosen career fields.

David Kellum gives the students pointers
about taping a television show.

Instead of placing each student with an athletic department professional for a day of activities, an itinerary was established to give students a general overview of the vast administrative responsibilities associated with a collegiate coaching or athletic administrative career.

In addition to watching the taping of "Ole Miss Basketball With Rod Barnes," students were given tours of the Athletic Ticket Office, Gillom Sports Center and Michael S. Starnes Athletic Training Center.
