OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss men's tennis junior Kristofer Stahlberg has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday, by the league office. This is the first honor for Stahlberg, a native of Kolmarden, Sweden, and the first player of the week for the Rebels this season.
"This is a tremendous honor for Kristofer," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "The SEC is the premier tennis conference in the country and this selection marks him as one of the hottest players in college tennis."
Stahlberg had an outstanding performance last week, going 6-0 in singles and doubles. In the Rebels' dual match against No. 5 ranked Georgia, Stahlberg teamed with doubles partner James Shortall to knock off the nation's No. 1 duo of Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott. He followed that up with a win over 43rd-ranked Chad Carlson in singles.
Ranked No. 38 in the nation in singles and No. 18 in doubles, Stahlberg has won 14 consecutive matches, losing only one set during that stretch. Stahlberg owns a combined 25-2 record in singles and doubles play this spring. He is 14-0 in singles and 11-2 in doubles. In SEC matches only, Stahlberg is 5-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles.
Stahlberg becomes the second Rebel to earn SEC Player of the Week honors. Shortall earned player of the week honors last year.
The Rebels will be on the road this weekend as they face No. 38 Kentucky on Friday and No. 44 Vanderbilt on Sunday.
