OXFORD, Miss. - The 28th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team won all six singles matches, including five in straight sets, to post a 6-1 win over Auburn on Monday afternoon at the Luther Young Tennis Complex. With the win, the Lady Rebels (9-12, 3-8) secured the No. 9 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament and will meet the No. 8 seed, Alabama, in the first round Thursday in Starkville.
The Lady Rebels have now won six in a row over Auburn and 11 of the last 12 matches. The Lady Rebels improved their series record against the Tigers to 18-8. Under head coach Jerry Montgomery, the Lady Rebels are 12-3 versus Auburn.
Auburn got on the board first by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Coming into the match, the Lady Rebels were 1-10 when losing the doubles point, but Monday would be different.
Sophomore Julie DeRoo downed Carolina Maurer 6-3, 6-0 to even the match 1-1. Alesya Ignatieva cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Liz Sauerborn at No. 4 singles and then freshman Karem Harboe dominated Summa Edwards 6-2, 6-2 on court five, to give Ole Miss a 3-1 lead.
Mira Radu won her third match in a row, easily defeating Carolina Ramirez 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot, to clinch the win for the Lady Rebels. Radu has won her last three matches in straight sets.
"We played very inspired tennis today and stayed focused throughout the match," Montgomery said. "It was great to see this young team grow in confidence and to close out all the singles matches. This gives us a significant amount of momentum heading into the SEC Tournament."
With the match won, Sabrina Peppl defeated Martina Janska 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to make it 5-1. Auburn only claimed one set in singles all day as Lady Rebel freshman Hanna-Katri Aalto topped Katia Illarionova 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for the final 6-1 score.
When Ole Miss meets Alabama in the first round of the SEC Tournament, they will be looking to avenge a tough 4-3 loss to the Crimson Tide on March 27 in Oxford.
